It’s Guru Purnima!
Guru Purnima is basically the Hindu “Teacher’s Holiday”. I wanted to share one of my favorite times in India with my Classical Dance gurus.
“Guru” is formed from the words meaning “remover” and “ignorance”. Even though I’m a professional dancer, I still learned from my short time with classical Indian dance; not just movement wise, but it was a refreshing reminder about what it takes to dance and what dancing is as an art!
Here’s a highlight reel of my dance studies in Jaipur and Mumbai where I studied Kathak and Bharatanatyam, respectively.
In both cases, we learned things separately. First the legs and then the arms, and then tried to put the 2 together, which was embarrassingly hard. It was a lot of new, detailed coordination that I was trying to do in a record amount of time.
